Nutritional and Supplement Aids for Cancer Therapy

(Adjuvant cancer treatments)

Prostate Cancer Breast Cancer  Bowel Cancer Cervix Cancer, HPV and CIN Changes

There is no doubt that diet, healthy life style, exercise and mental attitude are of the utmost importance, along side western medical treatment for cancer. The suggestions on this page MUST be only used along with conventional therapy, and always with the full knowledge of your oncologist, surgeon  and other medical advisors.

Over time the page will grow to have suggestions for adjuvant treatment for many of the common cancers as well as general advice.

Prostate cancer nutrition and supplements

  1. Selenium dose 400-800mcg/day (note: this is above the Australian RDI)
  2. Vitamin E 500 IU/day (preferably alpha & gamma forms of Vitamin E)
  3. Lycopene at least 30mg/day.
  4. Green Tea Extract - equivalent to at least 10 cups per day ( this is available as a supplement )
  5. Soy Tablets - the more genistein and other Isoflavones the better.
  6. Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables and IC3  450-900mg/day ( Indole 3 Carbinol  is a potent extract of Broccoli )
  7. Low GI diet
  8. Diet low in fatty meats and refined flour products, and high in Omega 3 fish, plus fish oil supplements 3000mg/day.

If the prostate cancer has spread to the bones add:

  1. Calcium citrate 500 mg x 2 in the evening (monitor serum calcium levels)
  2.  Prescription medications Actonel or Fosamax which replenish new bones and  Rocaltrol  ( synthetic Vitamin D analogue) which may slow bony metastases
  3.  Regular weight bearing exercise such as walking.

Breast cancer nutrition and supplements

  1. IC3 (Indole 3 Carbinol), 450-900mg/day depending on weight
  2. Green Tea Extract - equivalent to at least 10 cups per day ( this is available as a supplement )
  3. Curcumin high dose - up to 4g three times a day - should not be used when on chemotherapy
  4. Melatonin 3mg-50mg at bedtime ( needs prescription for compounding pharmacist )
  5. Selenium dose 200-400mcg/day ( note: this is above the Australian RDI )
  6. CLA ( conjugated linoleic acid ) 3-4 g/day
  7. Guarana ( slow release form of caffeine )
  8. Vitamins A, D, E
  9. Co Q 10 may be of benefit in high doses especially if on chemotherapy

If the breast cancer has spread to the bones add:

  1. Calcium citrate 500 mg x 2 in the evening (monitor serum calcium levels)

Bowel cancer nutrition and supplements. These need to be discussed with oncologist if you are on chemotherapy.

  1. Cimetidine 800mg/day  especially if sialyl Lewis-X and sialyl Lewis-A epitope expression on tumour cells.
  2. Low dose aspirin or Cox 2 inhibitor (Celebrex or Vioxx)
  3. Consider use of statin eg Pravachol, Zocor or Lipitor.
  4. Curcumin high dose - up to 4g three times a day - should not be used when on chemotherapy
  5. Green Tea Extract - equivalent to at least 10 cups per day ( this is available as a supplement )
  6. Selenium dose 200-400mcg/day ( note: this is above the Australian RDI )
  7. Vitamins A, D, E
  8. Co Q 10 may be of benefit in high doses
  9. Whey protein extract/bovine colostrum
  10. Modified Citrus Pectin 15 g/day

 

Cervical Dysplasia & CIN I, II & III nutrition and supplements

  1. Cimetidine 800mg/day  for 3 months  - Cimetidine is a strong inhibitor of Human Papilloma Virus ( prescription only )
  2. I3C ( Indole 3 Carbinol ) 200-400mg/day - has been shown to show regression of CIN II & III in 50% of cases.
  3. Vitamin A relatively high dose  5000 IU/day ( note Vitamin A is toxic in too big a dose  & max if pregnant is 2500 IU/day )
  4. Vitamin C 6000mg/day
  5. Selenium dose 200-400mcg/day ( note: this is above the Australian RDI )
  6. Folic acid  800mcg-5 mg and Vitamin B6 200mg/day
