Helping us help you

One of the most frustrating things about being in general practice is that patients try to cram in multiple problems into one appointment.

If you have more than one simple problem, or have a long term condition or you are feeling tired or depressed, or you want a "check up"  or a Pap smear please please book in for a long appointment. This will allow the doctors and nurse of Royston Clinic to do justice to your problem.

Another thing to try and avoid is the "by the way" going out the door symptom. For example you go to the doctor  and first you tell them about a rash. The doctor looks at the rash takes a history of the rash, offers a diagnosis, treatment plan and prescribes a cream for the rash. This usually takes about 15 minutes, so the appointment is over, then when you are going out the door you say "and by the way I have been getting some chest pains lately". This means the doctor is obliged to make sure you are not about to drop dead from a heart attack! So you have to come back in, a history of the chest pain is taken, blood pressure  & pulse are checked, we listen to the heart and lungs, then we may need to do an ECG, order blood tests and write a letter to a specialist. This takes another 30 minutes and suddenly we are running an hour behind time, everyone is stressed and the following patients don't have a fair deal with their turn to see the doctor.

So please try and prioritise the order of your symptoms, or if you have multiple problems, list them off to the doctor or nurse when you first come in; this allows the doctor to deal with the most important problem first, and then you may be asked to come back another day to deal with the other problems.

Our friendly Reception staff are trained to assess how long an appointment you will probably need, all you say to them is strictly confidential, and so if you feel you can it helps to let them know the nature of your problem, or that you have several matters to be dealt with and they can book the most appropriate consultation, or they may suggest you see  Sister Christine prior to seeing the doctor so she can do tests such as ECGs, for the heart, Spirometry (breathing tests for asthma), or test your urine if you feel you may have a urine infection or if you feel you may be pregnant.
