PATHOLOGY PROCEDURES 

AIM

To ensure all pathology specimens are collected, stored, transported and monitored correctly.

SPECIMENS 

·         All specimens are collected and handled using appropriate safety precautions- see infection control Policy (Circular 2002/45), kept in Practice Nurse's office.

·         Doctor puts specimen in appropriate specimen bag with completed request and places in or on Pathology Fridge.

·         Specimens stored as follows: -

Blood and Urine in Pathology Fridge located in the office

                                    Pap smears, swabs, sputum, histopathology on Fridge in basket.

                                    After Hours pathology pick ups are placed in locked box adjacent to front entrance of building 

COURIER TIMES (approx.)

Monday - Friday

11am

2.30pm

For evening, Saturday & Urgent pathology couriers can be organised by calling DHM on 98 555 200

 PATHOLOGY AND RADIOLOGY RESULTS 

·         Results are downloaded via Internet Fetch & Promedicus Programs daily and as required.

·                     This is usually done by Dr Richardson. If he is away a trained person will be nominated to take over this task.

·                     The Doctors then review all results on Medical director and mark for "no action", "discuss", or "urgent recall"

·                     No action - no return appointment necessary

·                     Discuss - return for appointment not urgent

·                     Urgent - needs urgent appointment.
